The theatre passed through several proprietors: taken over by Walter Bentley in August 1929, then by the Union Cinemas chain in November 1935, and subsequently absorbed by the Associated British Cinemas (ABC) chain in October 1937. Throughout these changes of ownership, live theatre continued to be programmed alongside films. In October 1956 the theatre was closed for structural alterations — including the removal of pillars and the lowering of the foyer ceiling — and was fitted with modern film projection equipment, reopening on 2 November 1956 as an art house cinema. This venture was never commercially successful, partly due to the enormous 1,500-seat capacity. It closed in May 1964, briefly became a bingo club, and was demolished later that same year. The site is today occupied by a car park and office building used by Kent Police, known as Bouverie House.

			## FHODS at the Pleasure Gardens Theatre

			### The Operatic Home (1913–c.1956)

			From 1913, the Pleasure Gardens Theatre served as the primary stage for FHODS's operatic programme. The theatre's scale — with its capacity of around 1,000 and its well-equipped stage — made it uniquely suited to the grand operatic and musical works the society aspired to produce. For much of the first half of the twentieth century, the Pleasure Gardens represented the pinnacle of what an amateur operatic society in Folkestone could achieve: a prestigious, centrally located venue with a long tradition of professional and semi-professional performance.

			FHODS used the venue for its operatic masterpieces across this period, through two world wars and the significant changes of ownership and use that affected the building from the mid-1930s onwards. Even as Union Cinemas and then ABC took over the management and introduced regular film screenings, live theatrical programming — including amateur operatic productions — continued to be accommodated.

			The wartime closures of both the society and the theatre ran in unhappy parallel: FHODS suspended operations during both the First and Second World Wars, as did much of the Pleasure Gardens' live programme. On both occasions, FHODS reconstituted itself and returned to the stage; the Pleasure Gardens was always there to receive them.

			### The Post-War Years and the Beginning of the End (1947–c.1963)

			After 1947, FHODS resumed its operatic programme at the Pleasure Gardens while its dramatic works found homes at other venues — the Leas Pavilion Theatre, Folkestone Town Hall, and Chichester Hall in Sandgate. This division of activity between venues reflected the society's growing ambition and the different scales required for opera versus drama. One local source notes that the society was "well used" at the Pleasure Gardens for its productions until the theatre closed in 1963, suggesting that operatic performances there continued into the final years of the building's active life, even as it transitioned towards cinema use in 1956.

			By the late 1950s the Pleasure Gardens had fundamentally changed in character. Its conversion to an art house cinema in 1956 marked a decisive shift away from live theatre, and the building's increasing structural decline made it a less viable home for ambitious amateur productions. FHODS's use of the venue in its final years as a theatre would have been against a backdrop of uncertainty about the building's future.

			### Loss of the Venue and Its Consequences

			The closure and demolition of the Pleasure Gardens Theatre in 1964 presented FHODS with one of the most significant challenges in its history. For fifty years the venue had been, in effect, the society's operatic heartland — the stage on which it defined itself as an operatic organisation and earned its reputation in the region. No comparable venue existed in Folkestone to replace it.

			FHODS responded with characteristic resilience. Rather than scaling back its ambitions, the society adapted by staging large-scale operatic and musical productions in whatever spaces could accommodate them: the Odeon cinema, the Ritz in Hythe, and Folkestone Town Hall all served in this capacity in the years following the Pleasure Gardens' loss. These were practical solutions rather than permanent homes, and they reflected the fundamental problem that would preoccupy FHODS for the next four decades: the absence of a single venue large enough to house all its productions.

			This problem was not fully resolved until 2001, when FHODS acquired and converted the former Garrison Church of St Mark at Shorncliffe Camp — the Tower Theatre — providing the society at last with a dedicated home capable of hosting opera, musicals, drama, and pantomime under one roof.

			The Pleasure Gardens Theatre was more than a venue for FHODS — it was the reason the society took its operatic turn. The reconstitution of the Folkestone Dramatic and Music Club as the Folkestone Operatic Society in 1913 was directly tied to the availability of the Pleasure Gardens as a suitable stage for opera. Without it, FHODS might have remained a purely dramatic organisation. The theatre shaped the society's identity, its repertoire, and its sense of what amateur theatre in Folkestone could aspire to be.

			The demolition of the Pleasure Gardens in 1964 — a loss mourned in Folkestone's theatrical community — cast a long shadow over the society's subsequent decades. The search for a worthy successor venue drove much of FHODS's institutional history in the latter twentieth century and ultimately led to the creation of the Tower Theatre, which stands as the society's permanent legacy to Folkestone's performing arts life.
